What Is Dried Tangerine Peel?

Dried Tangerine Peel (陈皮), known as Chen Pi, is the sun-dried and aged peel of the mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata). Its name literally means "aged peel", reflecting the long-held belief that the longer it is stored, the more mellow, fragrant, and effective it becomes. It is one of the most widely used Qi-regulating herbs in Chinese medicine and a beloved everyday ingredient in southern Chinese cooking and herbal soups.

Warm and aromatic, Chen Pi gently moves stagnant Qi in the Spleen and Stomach, relieves bloating and nausea, dries Damp, and transforms phlegm to ease coughs. Because it regulates Qi without depleting it, it is often added to tonic formulas to keep richer, cloying herbs from causing stagnation. Modern research attributes many of its effects to hesperidin and its fragrant essential oils.

History & Origin

Chen Pi has been treasured in Chinese medicine and cuisine for over two millennia. Uniquely among herbs, it is valued for ageing — properly stored peel grows milder and more aromatic with the years, and the finest aged peel from Guangdong commands great esteem.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)
The tangerine appears in the Shennong Bencao Jing, and its peel was valued early for regulating Qi and harmonising the middle.
Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE)
Physicians prized aged peel for transforming phlegm and relieving fullness; the principle that older peel is better took firm hold.
Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE)
Chen Pi (aged peel) was clearly distinguished and anchored Qi-regulating, phlegm-transforming formulas such as Er Chen Tang.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu emphasised that well-aged peel from Guangdong (Guang Chen Pi) was the finest, regulating Qi without harming it.
Modern Era
Hesperidin and aromatic essential oils are studied for digestive, anti-inflammatory, and phlegm-resolving effects.
