Apakah Akar Platycodon?
Platycodon Root (, Jié Gěng), derived from the dried root of Platycodon grandiflorus — a flowering plant with distinctive star-shaped violet blossoms — is one of the most widely used and eloquently described herbs in the Chinese materia medica. Native to East Asia and cultivated across China, Korea, and Japan, the root is harvested in autumn, peeled, and dried for medicinal use. Its characteristic bitter-acrid taste and ability to open and disperse the Lung Qi have made it indispensable in formulas targeting the upper respiratory system for over two thousand years.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Platycodon Root has a single-meridian affinity — the Lung — and this focus gives it great specificity and power in addressing Lung conditions. Its primary actions are to open and diffuse Lung Qi, transform and expel Phlegm, and benefit the throat. It is described as a “vessel” or “envoy” herb (zhōu jī) that carries other herbs upward to the chest and throat, making it a frequent addition to formulas targeting the upper burner regardless of the primary pattern. Its acrid, dispersing quality addresses Wind-Cold invasion of the Lung; its bitter, descending quality drains Phlegm and pus from the Lung. It is a core ingredient in classical formulas such as Sang Ju Yin, Yin Qiao San, and Jie Geng Tang.
Sejarah & Asal Usul
Platycodon Root has been documented in Chinese herbal medicine since the earliest classical texts, consistently regarded as one of the key herbs for Lung and throat conditions. Its dual role as a therapeutic herb and a “messenger” that guides other herbs to the chest has given it a distinctive and revered place in TCM formula design.
Kegunaan Tradisional
Opening & Diffusing Lung Qi
Platycodon Root’s primary action is to open constrained Lung Qi and restore its normal dispersing and descending functions — used for both exterior Wind invasions and internal Lung Qi stagnation.
Transforming & Expelling Phlegm
A key expectorant herb in TCM, dissolving and facilitating the expectoration of Phlegm from the Lung in both Cold-Phlegm and Heat-Phlegm patterns.
Benefiting the Throat
Consistently used for sore throat, throat swelling, hoarseness, and loss of voice — making it standard in formulas for upper respiratory infections and pharyngitis.
Draining Lung Abscess & Pus
In patterns of Lung abscess with expectoration of foul-smelling Phlegm-pus (Fei Yong), Platycodon Root opens and drains the abscess, often combined with Houttuynia (Yú Xīng Cǎo).
Guide Herb to the Upper Burner
Acts as an upward-directing envoy that carries the actions of co-administered herbs to the chest and throat, making it a strategic addition to many upper respiratory formulas.
External Wind Invasions
Used in early-stage Wind-Cold or Wind-Heat invasions affecting the Lung, helping to dispel the exterior pathogen and restore Lung diffusion — a key herb in Sang Ju Yin and Yin Qiao San.
