Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae
Tu Fu Ling clears damp-heat toxins from deep within the body — a classical remedy for skin conditions, joint pain and urinary tract infections.

What Is Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae?
Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae (土茯苓, Tǔ Fú Líng) is the dried rhizome of Smilax glabra, a climbing vine in the Smilacaceae family widespread across southern China, Southeast Asia and India. Despite its name containing 'fu ling' (茯苓 — the word for Poria), it is an entirely distinct herb with a different taxonomy and action profile. Tǔ Fú Líng is classified as sweet and bland, with a neutral thermal nature, and acts primarily on the Liver and Stomach channels.
Its principal actions are clearing heat, resolving dampness and detoxifying — particularly useful for damp-heat toxins that have lodged in the joints, skin or urinary tract. Classically, it was the chief herb used to treat syphilis (mei du) introduced to China in the 16th century, demonstrating its powerful detoxifying capability. Today it is used for skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema, joint pain and swelling from damp-heat Bi syndrome, urinary tract infections with heat signs, and mercury or heavy-metal toxicity. It also has the notable property of counteracting mercury poisoning, which remains clinically relevant.
History & Origin
Tu Fu Ling entered the materia medica record significantly during the Ming Dynasty following the introduction of syphilis to China, where it became the primary treatment. However, its use for damp-heat skin and joint conditions predates this era.
