What Is Prepared Rehmannia Root?

Prepared Rehmannia Root (熟地黄, Shú Dì Huáng) is the root of Rehmannia glutinosa that has been repeatedly steamed with rice wine and dried — traditionally nine times — transforming the raw, cold, blood-cooling root into a sweet, warm, deeply nourishing tonic that replenishes Liver and Kidney Yin, tonifies Blood, and fills the Essence (Jing). It is the foundational ingredient of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, arguably the most famous formula in TCM history, and appears in virtually every major prescription for Blood deficiency, Kidney Yin deficiency, and Jing depletion.

The steaming process with wine fundamentally alters the herb's chemistry and energetics: it increases the bioavailability of iridoid glycosides, reduces the cold, bitter constituents of raw Rehmannia, and enhances its affinity for the Liver and Kidney channels. Clinically, Shú Dì Huáng addresses the full spectrum of Blood and Yin deficiency manifestations — pallor, dizziness, palpitations, tinnitus, lower back weakness, night sweats, and premature greying of hair. Modern research confirms its hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, haematopoietic, and anti-ageing properties.

History & Origin

Rehmannia root has been central to Chinese medicine since antiquity, and the prepared form emerged as practitioners discovered that processing with wine transformed a cold medicinal into a warm tonic capable of filling the deepest reservoirs of Yin, Blood, and Essence.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE)
Raw Rehmannia (Sheng Di Huang) appears in the Shennong Bencao Jing as a superior blood-cooling and Yin-nourishing herb; early physicians begin experimenting with processing methods.
Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 CE)
Sun Simiao documents wine-steaming of Rehmannia to increase its warming and tonifying properties; the prepared form begins to be distinguished from the raw root in clinical use.
Song Dynasty (960 – 1279 CE)
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is formalised by Qian Yi as the foundational Kidney Yin tonic formula, with Shú Dì Huáng as its chief herb — a formula that remains in clinical use to this day.
Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen devotes extensive commentary to Prepared Rehmannia in Bencao Gangmu, describing the nine-steam nine-dry process and its transformative effect on the herb's therapeutic character.
Modern Era (20th–21st Century)
Pharmacological research confirms catalpol, acteoside, and polysaccharides as key bioactives with haematopoietic, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, and immunomodulatory effects, validating its use as a premier tonic herb.
