Poria Cocos
The 'anchor of tranquillity' — Poria Cocos has nourished the Spleen, calmed the Shen, and drained dampness for over two thousand years of Chinese medicine.

What Is Poria Cocos?
Poria Cocos (茯苓, Fú Líng) is the dried sclerotium of the parasitic fungus Wolfiporia extensa, which grows on the roots of pine trees across China, particularly in Yunnan, Hubei, and Anhui provinces. One of the most frequently used herbs in the entire Chinese materia medica, it is sweet, bland, and neutral in nature, entering the Heart, Spleen, and Kidney channels. Its combination of Spleen-tonifying and dampness-draining actions without being overly drying or stimulating makes it suitable for a vast range of conditions and constitutional types, including deficiency, excess, and mixed presentations.
Fú Líng is uniquely valued for its dual ability to calm the mind (Shen) while simultaneously strengthening digestive function — addressing both the psychological and physical consequences of Spleen deficiency with dampness accumulation. It appears in hundreds of classical formulas, including the foundational Si Jun Zi Tang, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, and Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan. Modern pharmacological research has identified beta-glucans (particularly pachymaran) as its primary bioactive compounds, demonstrating immunomodulatory, anti-tumour, adaptogenic, and hepatoprotective effects that have made it a subject of significant contemporary scientific interest.
