Plantain Seed
Tiny seeds with remarkable power — Plantain Seed drains dampness, clears heat, sharpens vision, and transforms phlegm through the water pathways of the body.

What Is Plantain Seed?
Plantain Seed (车前子, Chē Qián Zǐ) is the dried ripe seed of Plantago asiatica, harvested in summer and autumn across China, Japan, and Korea. In traditional Chinese medicine it is one of the most important herbs for draining dampness and clearing heat through the urinary system. Sweet and cold in nature, it enters the Kidney, Liver, Lung, and Small Intestine channels. Its primary action of 'separating the clear from the turbid' channels excess dampness downward and out through the urine while simultaneously firming the stool — a unique dual action that makes it indispensable for diarrhoea with concurrent urinary difficulty.
Plantain Seed is also valued for brightening the eyes by clearing liver fire and for transforming phlegm to relieve lung heat coughs. Its mucilaginous fibre content — confirmed by modern research — accounts for much of its therapeutic effect, absorbing water in the gut and supporting both stool consistency and cholesterol regulation. It is typically wrapped in cloth during decoction to prevent the mucilage from making the liquid too thick. Contemporary studies also document its anti-inflammatory, hypoglycaemic, and antihypertensive activities.
History & Origin
Among the most cited seeds in classical Chinese pharmacopoeia, Plantain Seed has shaped TCM practice for dampness-related conditions for over two millennia, appearing consistently from the earliest canonical texts through modern clinical guidelines.
Traditional Uses
Urinary Difficulty & Dysuria
Drains damp-heat from the Bladder and Small Intestine to relieve painful, burning, or scanty urination; a core herb in formulas like Ba Zheng San.
Damp-Heat Diarrhoea
Channels excess fluid downward through the urine rather than the stool, effectively firming loose stools while relieving concurrent urinary symptoms.
Liver Heat Eye Conditions
Clears ascending liver fire and wind-heat to relieve red, painful, swollen eyes, blurred vision, and photophobia.
Phlegm-Heat Cough
Transforms phlegm and clears lung heat to relieve productive coughs with thick yellow sputum, shortness of breath, or wheezing.
Oedema & Fluid Retention
Promotes urinary output to dispel pathological accumulation of fluids in the lower body, particularly in patterns of damp obstruction.
Liver-Kidney Deficiency Vision
When combined with nourishing herbs, supports gradual improvement of vision in early deficiency-type eye conditions by addressing both heat and insufficiency.
