What Is Dragon Tongue Plant?

Dragon Tongue Plant (龙脷叶, Lóng Lì Yè) is the dried leaf of Sauropus spatulifolius, a subtropical shrub native to southern China and Southeast Asia. The leaf's elongated, tongue-like shape gives the herb its evocative Cantonese name. In Guangdong food therapy, Lóng Lì Yè is a household staple added to simple boiled soups to gently clear Lung heat, relieve dry cough, and moisten the respiratory tract — particularly during the hot, dry autumn season or in air-conditioned environments.

Unlike stronger heat-clearing herbs, Dragon Tongue Plant is mild enough for daily culinary use and is frequently combined with pork ribs, lean pork, or almonds in nourishing soups suitable for the whole family, including children and the elderly. Its sweet, neutral character means it can be used continuously without depleting Spleen Qi. Traditional practitioners value it for lingering dry cough after cold resolution, sore scratchy throats, and voice hoarseness — conditions where moistening the Lung is the primary therapeutic priority.

History & Origin

Lóng Lì Yè is a regional herb with deep roots in Cantonese and Lingnan folk medicine. While it does not appear prominently in the classical pan-Chinese pharmacopoeias (its use predates systematic documentation in this region), it has been continuously recorded in southern Chinese materia medica texts and remains one of the most recognisable herbs in Guangdong household herbal soup culture.

19th Century — Lingnan Materia Medica
Documented in southern Chinese regional herbal texts as a folk remedy for dry cough, throat irritation, and Lung heat, particularly during dry winter and autumn months.

Traditional Uses

Dry Cough Relief

The primary application: added to soups or decoctions to moisten the Lung and soothe a persistent dry, tickling cough with little or no phlegm, common after illness or in dry weather.

Throat Moistening

Relieves a dry, scratchy, or hoarse throat from Lung dryness or residual heat, often combined with Luo Han Guo and Fritillaria in soothing soups.

Lingering Post-Cold Cough

Particularly suited to the recovery phase of respiratory illness when the pathogen has cleared but a dry, irritating cough and throat dryness persist.

Lung Heat Clearing

Gently clears mild Lung heat manifesting as a low-grade dry cough, slight thirst, and warm sensation in the chest — without the harsh cooling of stronger herbs.

Voice Restoration

Combined with Monk Fruit or Ophiopogon in soups for singers, teachers, and speakers whose voices become hoarse from overuse or dry-heat exposure.
