What Is Chickpeas?

Chickpeas (Ying Zui Dou, 鹰嘴豆), also known as garbanzo beans, are one of the world's oldest cultivated legumes. Sweet and neutral in nature, they are valued as a nourishing food-medicine that gently supports the body's foundational energy without being heavy or cloying.

In dietary therapy, Chickpeas enter the Spleen and Stomach channels, where they help tonify Qi and strengthen digestion. Rich in plant protein and fibre, they provide slow-release, easily-assimilated energy — making them a warming, grounding addition to nourishing soups and everyday meals.

History & Origin

Native to the Middle East and long cultivated across West and Central Asia, the Mediterranean, and India, chickpeas travelled the ancient trade routes and were adopted into regional food-therapy traditions, including Hui and Uyghur medicine within China.
