What Is Yu Zhu?

Yu Zhu (玉竹), known in English as Solomon's Seal or Fragrant Solomon's Seal, is the dried rhizome of Polygonatum odoratum. Its name translates poetically as 'jade bamboo', a reference to the plant's lustrous, jointed rhizome that resembles a string of jade beads. In traditional Chinese medicine it is prized as a gentle yet reliable tonic for Yin deficiency, particularly when the Lungs and Stomach are parched by heat, chronic illness, or constitutional dryness.

Unlike stronger Yin tonics that can burden the Spleen, Yu Zhu is considered moderate in action and easy on digestion, making it suitable for long-term use in herbal soups and congees. Modern research points to its polysaccharides and steroidal saponins as key bioactive constituents, supporting immune modulation, blood glucose regulation, and cardiovascular protection. Its mild sweetness and silky texture also make it one of the most palatable of all TCM tonic herbs.

History & Origin

Yu Zhu has been documented in Chinese materia medica for over two millennia. The Shennong Bencao Jing (Divine Farmer's Classic, circa 200 CE) lists it among the superior-grade herbs that can be taken long-term without harm. Later scholarship expanded its applications and refined the understanding of its moistening properties.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE)
First formally recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing as a superior tonic herb for 'nourishing the middle, quieting the spirit, and eliminating Wind.'
Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 CE)
Li Jing's Xinxiu Bencao highlighted Yu Zhu's role in addressing Yin deficiency patterns associated with febrile diseases and chronic consumptive conditions.
Song Dynasty (960 – 1279 CE)
Included in the Bencao Yanyi, which praised its ability to moisten the Lungs and alleviate dry cough without producing dampness.
Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu consolidated centuries of clinical experience, recommending Yu Zhu in formulas for Lung dryness, consumptive thirst, and Wind-Damp bi syndrome.
Modern Era (20th – 21st Century)
Pharmacological studies confirm polysaccharide fractions with hypoglycaemic, immunomodulatory, and cardioprotective effects, validating classical indications and expanding Yu Zhu's use in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Beauty & Skin Health

Historically used in topical preparations and internal formulas to improve skin luster, reduce dryness, and promote a healthy complexion through Yin nourishment.
