What Is White Cardamom?

White Cardamom (白豆蔻, Bái Dòu Kòu) is the dried fruit of Amomum kravanh, native to the forests of Cambodia and Thailand and cultivated across Southeast Asia. Its small, white-bleached pods contain clusters of aromatic seeds rich in volatile oils — primarily 1,8-cineole — that give it a cool, camphoraceous-sweet fragrance distinct from the greener notes of Indian cardamom. With acrid, warm properties, Bái Dòu Kòu is a premier herb for transforming dampness and regulating middle-burner Qi.

In TCM, when the Spleen and Stomach are invaded by dampness, Qi stagnates, leading to bloating, nausea, poor appetite, and a sensation of fullness. White Cardamom warms the middle, dispels dampness, and promotes the smooth movement of Qi to relieve these symptoms. It also has a descending action on rebellious Stomach Qi, making it effective for nausea and vomiting. As a Lung channel herb, its aromatic vapours can also help open the chest and benefit the upper burner.

History & Origin

White Cardamom entered Chinese materia medica via the southern Silk Road trade routes, likely during the Tang dynasty, and was rapidly adopted as an essential aromatic herb for dampness-related digestive disorders.

Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)
First documented in Chinese medical texts as an import from Cambodian and Southeast Asian territories; classified as a warming aromatic for the Spleen and Stomach.
Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE)
Widely used in imperial court formulas for digestive discomfort and morning sickness; its trade along southern maritime routes made it increasingly available.
1596 CE
Li Shizhen's Běn Cǎo Gāng Mù differentiated Bái Dòu Kòu from Cǎo Dòu Kòu (Tsaoko), clarifying their distinct channel affinities and clinical applications.
Qing Dynasty (1644–1912 CE)
Standard component in warming-and-transforming dampness formulas; featured prominently in Wēn Bìng school texts for clearing damp-heat from the upper burner.
Modern Era
Essential oil analysis has confirmed 1,8-cineole as the dominant volatile, with research supporting its carminative, anti-nausea, and antimicrobial properties.
