What Is Radix Notoginseng?

Radix Notoginseng (三七, Sān Qī) — also known as Tian Qi or Pseudo-ginseng — is the dried root of Panax notoginseng, a plant of the same family as the celebrated Panax ginseng. Cultivated primarily in the Wenshan region of Yunnan Province, where it has been grown for over six centuries, Sān Qī is one of the most highly prized and extensively researched herbs in the entire Chinese materia medica. Its name “three-seven” (三七) refers variously to the plant’s characteristic leaf arrangement or to the traditional cultivation cycle of three to seven years needed to produce a mature, potent root.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sān Qī occupies a unique and almost paradoxical position: it is simultaneously the most powerful haemostatic (bleeding-stopping) herb in the Chinese pharmacopoeia and one of the most effective herbs for invigorating Blood and resolving stasis. This dual action — stopping bleeding without causing stasis, and moving Blood without provoking further bleeding — is described in classical texts as “dissolving stasis without harming new Blood, stopping bleeding without leaving static Blood.” Raw Sān Qī predominantly moves Blood and stops bleeding; steamed (熟三七, shú sān qī) is more tonifying to Qi and Blood. It is the principal ingredient in the celebrated Yunnan Baiyao formula and is extensively used in cardiovascular and trauma medicine.

History & Origin

Radix Notoginseng rose to prominence during the Ming Dynasty, when it was discovered by military physicians in Yunnan as an extraordinary wound herb. Its remarkable ability to control haemorrhage while preventing clot formation earned it the designation “divine medicine of trauma” and “gold that does not change,” reflecting its extraordinary value.

Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen introduces Sān Qī to the broader Chinese materia medica in the Bencao Gangmu, describing it as a herb from Guangxi used by indigenous peoples to treat wounds and bleeding — noting it was more precious than gold in its region of origin.
Late Ming – Early Qing (17th century)
Military physicians and surgeons in southern China adopt Sān Qī widely for battlefield trauma, internal bleeding, and bruising; its reputation as the supreme haemostatic and anti-stasis herb becomes firmly established.
Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912 CE)
The Bencao Gangmu Shiyi and other Qing-era texts expand documentation of Sān Qī’s applications to include chest pain from Blood stasis, post-partum Blood stasis, and pain syndromes — reflecting its evolving role beyond pure trauma medicine.
Early 20th Century
Yunnan Baiyao — a famous proprietary formula containing Sān Qī — is developed and commercialised, becoming one of the most widely used first-aid preparations in China and across Southeast Asia.
Modern Era
Sān Qī is among the most studied TCM herbs globally; research focuses on its saponin content (notoginsenosides) and their roles in haemostasis, platelet function, cardiovascular protection, and anti-inflammatory activity.

Traditional Uses

Stopping Bleeding

The premier TCM herb for haemorrhage of all types — traumatic, internal, or from various organ systems — stopping bleeding effectively without causing Blood stasis.

Resolving Blood Stasis & Pain

Invigorates Blood and dissolves stasis to relieve pain from traumatic injury, bruising, swelling, chest pain from coronary stasis, and post-surgical pain.

Traumatic Injury Treatment

The definitive herb for trauma medicine in TCM: applied topically as powder or taken internally for fractures, sprains, contusions, and wounds.

Cardiovascular Support

Used in modern integrative medicine for conditions involving Blood stasis in the Heart vessels, including chest bi-syndrome (analogous to angina) and post-stroke rehabilitation.

Post-Partum Blood Stasis

Assists the resolution of Blood stasis after childbirth, easing post-partum pain and promoting recovery when stasis prevents the natural involution of the uterus.

Tonic Use (Steamed Form)

Steamed Sān Qī (shú sān qī) is milder and more tonifying, used to supplement Qi and Blood in patterns of deficiency, particularly for those with both Blood deficiency and mild stasis.
