Radix Clematidis
The mighty spirit of the immortals — Radix Clematidis cuts through wind, dampness, and phlegm with fierce, penetrating warmth to free stiff, painful joints and expel deep obstructions.

What Is Radix Clematidis?
Radix Clematidis (威灵仙, Wēi Líng Xiān — literally 'powerful and effective immortal') is the root and rhizome of Clematis chinensis, a climbing perennial native to southern and central China. Acrid, salty, and warm, it enters the Bladder channel and is classified among the strongest wind-dampness-dispelling herbs in the Chinese materia medica. Its powerfully mobile, penetrating nature allows it to reach the extremities, open the channels and collaterals, dispel wind-cold-damp pathogens, and relieve pain and stiffness in joints and sinews. It is said that 'one tael of Wēi Líng Xiān disperses the wind of ten li' — reflecting its reputation for swift, vigorous action.
Radix Clematidis is used for Bi syndrome (painful obstruction) in all its forms but is particularly effective for wandering or fixed pain in the joints and limbs from wind-cold-damp obstruction, and for the softening of fish bones lodged in the throat — a classical application unique to this herb involving its salty, softening nature. Modern pharmacological research has identified protoanemonin, clematichinenoside, and triterpene saponins as key bioactives, demonstrating anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antifungal, and antispasmodic effects consistent with its classical uses for painful conditions.
History & Origin
Wēi Líng Xiān has commanded respect in Chinese medicine since its documented introduction to systematic use, celebrated for its decisive action on stubborn wind-dampness conditions that resist gentler treatment.
Traditional Uses
Wind-Damp Bi Syndrome (Joint Pain)
Dispels wind, cold, and dampness from the channels and collaterals to relieve pain, stiffness, and restricted movement in joints and limbs from painful obstruction syndrome.
Wandering Joint Pain (Wind Bi)
Particularly effective for migratory joint pain that moves from place to place, reflecting wind's wandering nature in the channels.
Fish Bone Lodged in the Throat
A classical unique application: decocted with vinegar and sugar to soften and dislodge fish bones or other small foreign bodies caught in the oesophagus.
Sinew & Muscle Stiffness
Opens the twelve channels and eight extraordinary vessels to relieve stiffness, spasm, and restricted movement in muscles, sinews, and joints.
Phlegm Accumulation & Nodules
The salty nature helps soften hardness and disperse phlegm nodules when combined with appropriate formula partners.
Gout & Uric Acid Conditions
Used in TCM formulas for damp-heat Bi that presents with hot, red, swollen joints characteristic of gout and other inflammatory arthropathies.
