What Is Spine Date Seed?

Spine Date Seed (酸枣仁, Suān Zǎo Rén) is the dried, ripe seed kernel of Ziziphus spinosa, a thorny shrub native to northern China. The seeds are harvested in autumn, dried, and gently processed to reveal the pale inner kernel. With a mild sweet-sour flavour and neutral energy, Suān Zǎo Rén is one of the most prized herbs in classical TCM for calming an overactive mind and supporting healthy sleep without causing grogginess.

In TCM, the Heart governs the spirit (shén), and when Heart Blood or Yin is insufficient, the spirit becomes restless, leading to insomnia, palpitations, and anxiety. Suān Zǎo Rén nourishes Heart Blood and Liver Yin, anchors the spirit, and gently consolidates sweat. It is a core ingredient in the famous formula Suān Zǎo Rén Tāng and remains one of the most commonly used herbs in modern integrative sleep support.

History & Origin

Spine Date Seed has been documented in Chinese medicine for over two thousand years. It appears in the earliest comprehensive materia medica texts and has maintained a central role in the Calm-the-Spirit category through every subsequent dynasty.

c. 200 CE
Listed in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica) as a superior-grade herb for settling the heart and prolonging life.
c. 220 CE
Featured in Zhang Zhongjing's Jīn Guì Yào Lüè in the formula Suān Zǎo Rén Tāng — still the benchmark classical formula for insomnia with deficiency heat.
659 CE
Recorded in the Táng Běn Cǎo (Tang Materia Medica), the world's first state-sponsored pharmacopoeia, confirming widespread clinical use.
1596 CE
Li Shizhen's Běn Cǎo Gāng Mù provided detailed cultivation notes and distinguished between the raw (calming) and dry-fried (sleep-promoting) preparations.
20th–21st Century
Modern pharmacological research has identified saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids in Suān Zǎo Rén that modulate GABA receptors, supporting its traditional reputation as a sleep aid.
