What Is Rhizoma Polygonati?

Rhizoma Polygonati (黄精, Huáng Jīng) is the dried rhizome of Polygonatum sibiricum (Siberian Solomon's seal), a shade-loving perennial native to northern and northeastern China. It should not be confused with Yu Zhu (玉竹, Polygonatum odoratum), a related species with which it is sometimes grouped. Huáng Jīng is classified as sweet and neutral in TCM, acting on the Lung, Spleen and Kidney channels — the three organs most directly involved in the production and conservation of Qi, Yin and Jing (essence).

In classical literature, Huang Jing was regarded as one of the most prized longevity herbs — said to be the 'food of the immortals' (xian ren shi) and associated with Daoist practices of essence cultivation. Its broad tonic action encompasses tonifying Spleen and Stomach Qi, nourishing Lung Yin and relieving dry cough, and replenishing Kidney Jing to address premature ageing, lower back weakness and diminished vitality. Modern research has identified bioactive polysaccharides, steroidal saponins and lectins in Huang Jing that demonstrate immunomodulatory, anti-diabetic, anti-ageing and adaptogenic properties.

History & Origin

Huang Jing carries a legendary status in Daoist herbal tradition as a herb of immortality and longevity. While this mythological dimension developed over centuries, its practical medicinal use is grounded in classical materia medica from the Han period onward.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE)
Recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing as a superior herb for tonifying the Middle Jiao, strengthening Spleen Qi and building long-term vitality through regular use.
Daoist Tradition (c. 200 – 900 CE)
Huang Jing becomes central to Daoist longevity and inner alchemy practices, with texts such as the Baopuzi by Ge Hong describing its use for achieving extraordinary vitality and longevity.
Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 CE)
Sun Simiao's works formalise its use for Kidney deficiency, premature greying, weakened sinews and bones, and wasting disorders — broadening its clinical scope considerably.
Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu provides a definitive monograph, differentiating Huang Jing clearly from Yu Zhu and other Polygonatum species, and cataloguing its wide tonic applications.
Modern Era
Contemporary research validates Huang Jing polysaccharides for anti-hyperglycaemic, immunostimulant and anti-ageing effects, supporting its integration into functional health foods and adaptogenic formulas.
