What Is Bitter Apricot Seed?

Bitter Apricot Seed (Ku Xing Ren, 苦杏仁) is one of the most important respiratory herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, derived from the kernels of the bitter apricot (Prunus armeniaca). Unlike its sweet counterpart (Tian Xing Ren), Ku Xing Ren is specifically medicinal — potent in action and used in carefully measured quantities to treat cough, asthma, and constipation.

Bitter and slightly warm in nature, with mild toxicity that is neutralised through proper preparation, Ku Xing Ren descends and disperses Lung Qi — the downward, moistening direction that the Lung naturally governs. This makes it the primary herb for any cough or respiratory difficulty, whether caused by Wind-Cold, Wind-Heat, Dryness, or phlegm obstruction. Its secondary action on the Large Intestine also makes it effective for dry, difficult bowel movements.

History & Origin

Apricot seeds have been recorded as medicinal ingredients in China since antiquity, with Bitter Apricot Seed formally documented as a key respiratory herb across classical texts spanning 2,000 years.

Shennong Bencao Jing (circa 200 CE)
Appears among the classic herbs, noted for relieving cough and panting, and treating various chest and Lung conditions.

Traditional Uses

Stops Cough & Calms Wheezing

The primary action of Ku Xing Ren — it descends rebellious Lung Qi to relieve both productive and dry coughs, and calms asthmatic wheezing.

Disperses Lung Qi

Opens and spreads Lung Qi when obstructed by Wind, Cold, Heat, or Dryness — restoring the Lung's natural descending and dispersing function.

Moistens the Intestines

As an oily seed, Ku Xing Ren lubricates the Large Intestine, used for dry constipation where insufficient fluid makes elimination difficult.

Relieves Wind-Cold Cough

Combined with warming herbs like Ephedra and Cassia Bark for cough and panting from external Wind-Cold invasion.

Relieves Wind-Heat Cough

Combined with cooling herbs like Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum for cough, sore throat, and mild fever from Wind-Heat.

Addresses Dry Cough

In Dryness patterns — especially in autumn — combined with moistening herbs for dry, ticklish, persistent cough.
