Bai Zhu
The cornerstone Spleen tonic of classical Chinese Medicine — Bai Zhu dries dampness, strengthens the middle burner, and builds the body's foundation for lasting energy, immune strength, and digestive harmony.
What Is Bai Zhu?
Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes, 白术) is one of the most fundamental and widely used herbs in all of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dried rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, it has earned the title "the foremost herb for strengthening the Earth" — a reference to the Spleen and Stomach, which govern digestion and the production of Qi and Blood.
Bitter, sweet, and warm in nature, Bai Zhu tonifies the Spleen, dries dampness, and stabilises the digestive system. It is a core ingredient in foundational classical formulas including Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) and Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder), and is considered essential for rebuilding foundational energy after illness, overwork, or chronic fatigue.
History & Origin
Bai Zhu has been a cornerstone of Chinese herbal medicine for over 2,000 years, appearing in the earliest materia medica and remaining one of the most prescribed herbs in TCM practice today.
Traditional Uses
Tonifies Spleen & Stomach
The primary herb for Spleen Qi deficiency — poor appetite, fatigue, bloating, and loose stools arising from a weakened digestive centre.
Dries Dampness
Strengthens the Spleen's ability to transform and transport fluids, preventing dampness from accumulating as oedema, heaviness, and phlegm.
Stabilises Wei Qi (Immune Defence)
A key component of Yu Ping Feng San, the classical immune-fortifying formula used to prevent recurrent colds and respiratory infections.
Stops Excessive Sweating
Used for spontaneous sweating from Qi deficiency, where the body can no longer hold sweat appropriately.
Calms the Foetus
Classically used during pregnancy for patterns of threatened miscarriage due to Spleen deficiency with restless foetus.
Resolves Water Retention
Promotes urination and reduces oedema, particularly when fluid retention arises from the Spleen's failure to transform dampness.
