Red Sage Root
Revered as 'one herb with the power of four', Dan Shen is TCM's foremost herb for activating Blood, transforming stasis and calming the heart.

What Is Red Sage Root?
Red Sage Root (丹参, Dān Shēn) is the dried root and rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza, a perennial herbaceous plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to China and Japan. Its distinctive crimson-red roots give it both its common name and its visual identity. In TCM, Dān Shēn is classified as bitter and slightly cold, and it acts on the Heart, Pericardium and Liver channels — a combination that makes it uniquely suited to cardiovascular, circulatory and emotional conditions.
The classical adage 'Yi Wei Dan Shen San, Gong Tong Si Wu Tang' (一味丹参散,功同四物汤) — 'One dose of Dan Shen equals the power of the Four-Substance Decoction' — speaks to its potency in nourishing and moving Blood simultaneously. Pharmacologically, its primary active constituents include tanshinones (lipophilic diterpenes) and danshensu (water-soluble salvianolic acids), which have demonstrated vasodilatory, antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects in extensive clinical and laboratory research, making Dan Shen one of the most extensively studied TCM herbs in modern pharmacology.
History & Origin
Dān Shēn's medicinal use is documented in the Shennong Bencao Jing where it was placed in the upper grade, indicating long-term safety. Its association with the heart and Blood channels has remained consistent across two millennia of classical literature.
Traditional Uses
Cardiovascular & Coronary Health
Dan Shen is widely used in both classical formulas and modern integrative medicine for coronary artery disease, angina pectoris and hypertension, improving blood flow and reducing clot risk.
Menstrual Irregularities & Dysmenorrhoea
As a premier Blood-activating herb, it addresses painful, irregular or scanty menstruation, amenorrhoea and postpartum Blood stasis retention.
Liver Fibrosis & Hepatoprotection
Research supports Dan Shen's antifibrotic action in the liver, making it relevant to chronic liver disease management alongside traditional Liver-clearing indications.
Calming the Spirit (Shen)
Its action on the Heart and Pericardium channels means it is used for insomnia, palpitations and anxiety where Blood stasis or heat disturbs the Shen.
Pain & Trauma
Activating Blood and transforming stasis makes Dan Shen effective for pain from traumatic injuries, fixed abdominal masses and chest pain from Qi and Blood obstruction.
Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant
Salvianolic acids possess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, supporting applications in conditions characterised by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress.
