What Is Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae?

Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae (土茯苓, Tǔ Fú Líng) is the dried rhizome of Smilax glabra, a climbing vine in the Smilacaceae family widespread across southern China, Southeast Asia and India. Despite its name containing 'fu ling' (茯苓 — the word for Poria), it is an entirely distinct herb with a different taxonomy and action profile. Tǔ Fú Líng is classified as sweet and bland, with a neutral thermal nature, and acts primarily on the Liver and Stomach channels.

Its principal actions are clearing heat, resolving dampness and detoxifying — particularly useful for damp-heat toxins that have lodged in the joints, skin or urinary tract. Classically, it was the chief herb used to treat syphilis (mei du) introduced to China in the 16th century, demonstrating its powerful detoxifying capability. Today it is used for skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema, joint pain and swelling from damp-heat Bi syndrome, urinary tract infections with heat signs, and mercury or heavy-metal toxicity. It also has the notable property of counteracting mercury poisoning, which remains clinically relevant.

History & Origin

Tu Fu Ling entered the materia medica record significantly during the Ming Dynasty following the introduction of syphilis to China, where it became the primary treatment. However, its use for damp-heat skin and joint conditions predates this era.

Pre-Ming Use
Smilax rhizomes were used in folk medicine across southern China for joint pain, skin sores and urinary difficulty long before their formal inclusion in classical texts.
Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE)
Following the arrival of syphilis in China around 1505 CE, Tu Fu Ling rapidly becomes the most important herbal treatment. Li Shizhen documents this extensively in the Bencao Gangmu, detailing its dramatic curative results.
Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912 CE)
Continued as a primary syphilis treatment and extended to other sexually transmitted damp-heat toxin conditions. Also noted for counteracting mercury toxicity from the heavy-metal treatments used for syphilis at the time.
20th Century
With the advent of antibiotics, its anti-syphilitic role receded. Research pivoted to its applications in skin diseases, joint inflammation and heavy-metal detoxification.
Modern Era
Contemporary studies confirm anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities in Tu Fu Ling extracts. It is used in integrative dermatology and rheumatology and remains a popular Cantonese soup herb for skin clarity.
