Rehmannia Glutinosa
The unprocessed root of rehmannia — a sweet, cooling yin tonic that clears heat, cools the blood, and replenishes fluids, distinct from the warming Prepared Rehmannia.
What Is Rehmannia Glutinosa?
Rehmannia Glutinosa (生地黄), known as Sheng Di Huang, is the fresh or dried unprocessed root of Rehmannia glutinosa. Sweet, slightly bitter, and cold, it clears heat, cools the blood, nourishes yin, and generates fluids. It is the raw counterpart to the warming, blood-tonifying Prepared Rehmannia (熟地黄).
Sheng Di Huang is a leading herb for heat that has entered the blood — with signs such as fever, bleeding, or skin eruptions — and for yin deficiency with heat, including night sweats, a dry mouth and throat, and 'wasting-thirst'. In women's wellness it is valued for nourishing yin and gently cooling the restless heat that can accompany menopause.
