Eucommia Bark
One of China's most prized tonic barks — Eucommia Bark tonifies Liver and Kidney Yang, strengthens bones and sinews, calms the fetus, and supports healthy blood pressure with its warm, deeply nourishing power.
What Is Eucommia Bark?
Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong, 杜仲) is the dried inner bark of Eucommia ulmoides — China's only native deciduous rubber tree — and one of the most celebrated tonic herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Characterised by the fine white latex threads visible when the bark is broken, Eucommia has been prized as a premier Yang tonic and musculoskeletal strengthener for over 2,000 years.
Sweet and warm in nature, Eucommia Bark enters the Liver and Kidney channels. Its primary actions are to tonify Liver and Kidney Yang and strengthen the bones, sinews, and lower back. In TCM theory, the Kidney governs bone and the Liver governs sinew — and Eucommia's dual action on both organs makes it uniquely effective for the musculoskeletal system. It is also one of the foremost herbs for calming the fetus and preventing miscarriage in patterns of Kidney deficiency.
History & Origin
Eucommia Bark has been documented in Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years, holding a consistently prominent position in classical materia medica as one of the most valued and effective tonic barks.
Traditional Uses
Tonifies Liver & Kidney Yang
The foundational action — strengthens the Yang of both the Liver and Kidney, used for chronic fatigue, cold limbs, decreased libido, and the myriad manifestations of Kidney Yang deficiency.
Strengthens Bones & Sinews
A premier herb for musculoskeletal weakness — specifically strengthens the bones (Kidney governs bone) and sinews (Liver governs sinew) for lower back pain, weak knees, and joint stiffness.
Relieves Lower Back & Knee Pain
One of the most frequently used herbs for chronic lower back and knee pain from Kidney deficiency — warming, strengthening, and reducing the soreness and weakness of deficient Kidney Yang.
Calms the Fetus
A classical and still widely used application — stabilises and calms a restless fetus and prevents threatened or habitual miscarriage from Kidney deficiency failing to hold the fetus.
Supports Blood Pressure Wellness
Modern research has confirmed its blood pressure-lowering properties — an extension of its classical Liver-calming and Kidney-tonifying actions.
Strengthens Urinary Function
Tonifies Kidney Qi to strengthen urinary control — used for frequent urination, urinary incontinence, and weak bladder function from Kidney deficiency.
