What Is Dried Hawthorn?

Dried Hawthorn (Shan Zha, 山楂) is the dried fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida, a small thorny tree native to northern China. One of the most beloved flavours in Chinese food culture — appearing in the iconic tanghulu (sugar-coated hawthorn skewers) — it is equally important as a medicinal herb for its powerful ability to dissolve food stagnation and invigorate blood.

Sour, sweet, and slightly warm in nature, Dried Hawthorn enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Liver channels. Its primary action is dissolving food accumulation — particularly the stagnation of fatty, meaty foods that the Spleen struggles to digest. Its secondary action of invigorating Blood makes it valuable for blood stasis conditions. Modern research has also confirmed its remarkable cardiovascular benefits, bringing new scientific validity to its classical uses.

History & Origin

Hawthorn has been used as food and medicine in China since ancient times, with formal medicinal documentation beginning in the Tang Dynasty and expanding greatly through the Ming and Qing periods.

Tang Dynasty
First formally documented in Tang Dynasty materia medica for its digestive properties, particularly for relieving accumulation of undigested meat and fatty foods.

Traditional Uses

Dissolves Food Stagnation

The primary and most celebrated action — dissolves accumulation of undigested food, particularly fatty and meaty foods, used for bloating, fullness, and discomfort after heavy meals.

Invigorates Blood & Disperses Stasis

Moves stagnant Blood in the Liver channel, used for post-partum blood stasis, abdominal pain, menstrual disorders, and abdominal masses.

Reduces Cholesterol & Supports the Heart

A classical and modern use — Hawthorn's flavonoids support healthy cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and cardiac function.

Relieves Diarrhoea from Food Stagnation

Charred Hawthorn (Shan Zha Tan) is used specifically to relieve diarrhoea and dysentery from food accumulation and intestinal infection.

Regulates Menstruation

By invigorating Blood in the Liver channel, Dried Hawthorn helps regulate irregular, painful, or scanty menstruation from blood stasis.

Reduces Abdominal Distension

Promotes the movement of Qi and Food through the digestive system, relieving bloating, belching, and abdominal fullness.
