Dried Chinese Yam
One of TCM's most treasured tonic foods — Dried Chinese Yam simultaneously nourishes the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney, generates fluids, and builds lasting vitality without being excessive or cloying.
What Is Dried Chinese Yam?
Dried Chinese Yam (Huai Shan / Shan Yao, 淮山 / 山药) is one of the most universally valued food-medicines in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dried slices of Dioscorea polystachya — particularly the famous variety from the Huaiqing region of Henan province — are prized for their unique ability to simultaneously tonify three vital organ systems: the Spleen, the Lung, and the Kidney.
Sweet and neutral in nature, Dried Chinese Yam enters the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney channels without being excessive or one-sided in its actions. This balanced, gentle nature makes it one of the safest tonic herbs for long-term, daily use. It tonifies Qi and Yin, generates body fluids, and has a secondary astringent action that helps stabilise Kidney Qi — used for excessive urination, vaginal discharge, and spermatorrhoea from deficiency.
History & Origin
Chinese Yam has been cultivated and used as food and medicine in China for over 3,000 years, with records dating to the Zhou Dynasty and extensive documentation in all major classical materia medica.
