What Is Dried Chinese Yam?

Dried Chinese Yam (Huai Shan / Shan Yao, 淮山 / 山药) is one of the most universally valued food-medicines in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dried slices of Dioscorea polystachya — particularly the famous variety from the Huaiqing region of Henan province — are prized for their unique ability to simultaneously tonify three vital organ systems: the Spleen, the Lung, and the Kidney.

Sweet and neutral in nature, Dried Chinese Yam enters the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney channels without being excessive or one-sided in its actions. This balanced, gentle nature makes it one of the safest tonic herbs for long-term, daily use. It tonifies Qi and Yin, generates body fluids, and has a secondary astringent action that helps stabilise Kidney Qi — used for excessive urination, vaginal discharge, and spermatorrhoea from deficiency.

History & Origin

Chinese Yam has been cultivated and used as food and medicine in China for over 3,000 years, with records dating to the Zhou Dynasty and extensive documentation in all major classical materia medica.

Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BCE)
Chinese Yam (then called Shu Yu) was cultivated as a staple food crop and recognised for its tonic properties in the earliest Chinese agricultural and culinary records.

Traditional Uses

Tonifies Spleen & Stomach Qi

The primary digestive tonic action — strengthens Spleen Qi to improve appetite, reduce fatigue, address loose stools, and support efficient digestion and nutrient absorption.

Nourishes Lung Qi & Yin

Supports Lung function and moistens the Lung, used for chronic dry cough, shortness of breath, and respiratory weakness from Lung Qi or Yin deficiency.

Tonifies Kidney Qi & Essence

Nourishes Kidney Qi and Jing, supporting vitality, reproductive health, and the stabilisation of Kidney function in patterns of deficiency.

Astringes & Stabilises

A gentle astringent action stabilises Kidney Qi — used for frequent urination, excessive vaginal discharge, and spermatorrhoea from Kidney deficiency.

Generates Fluids & Nourishes Yin

Moistens dryness and generates body fluids, used for dry mouth, thirst, and Yin deficiency patterns especially in the Lung and Stomach.

Safe for Daily Long-Term Use

Its perfectly neutral, balanced nature makes it one of the safest TCM tonic herbs — suitable for daily use by people of all constitutions, ages, and conditions.
