What Is Cassia Seed?

Cassia Seed (Jue Ming Zi, 决明子) is one of the most beloved vision-supporting herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The small, shiny seeds of Senna obtusifolia have been used for over 2,000 years specifically for their affinity with the eyes and the Liver — the organ most intimately connected with vision in TCM.

Bitter, sweet, and slightly cold in nature, Cassia Seed enters the Liver, Large Intestine, and Kidney channels. Its bitter-cold nature clears Liver heat that rises to disturb the eyes, while its sweet quality gently nourishes. A secondary action on the Large Intestine makes it effective for heat-type constipation. Today it is one of the most popular herbs in wellness teas and daily tonic preparations across East Asia.

History & Origin

Cassia Seed has been a cornerstone of eye-care herbal medicine in China since the Han Dynasty, remaining one of the most used herbs for eye health and Liver fire in TCM practice today.

Shennong Bencao Jing (circa 200 CE)
Listed as a superior-grade herb, praised for brightening the eyes, treating night blindness, and clearing Liver heat — establishing its primary role as a vision herb.

Traditional Uses

Clears Liver Heat & Brightens Eyes

The primary action — cools Liver fire that rises to disturb the eyes, used for red, dry, painful eyes, blurred vision, and excessive tearing.

Disperses Wind-Heat

Relieves eye conditions from Wind-Heat invasion — redness, swelling, photophobia, and discharge from acute eye inflammation.

Calms Liver Yang

Anchors rising Liver Yang, used for headache, dizziness, and hypertension patterns associated with Liver Yang rising upward.

Gently Moves the Bowels

Its Large Intestine channel entry makes it effective for heat-type constipation — dry, difficult stools from heat consuming fluids.

Nourishes Liver Yin

The sweet quality gently nourishes Liver Yin, supporting eye health in patterns of mild Yin deficiency with dryness.

Reduces Liver Fat

Modern research supports traditional use — Cassia Seed is associated with supporting healthy cholesterol and liver fat metabolism.
