What Is Black Bean?

Black Bean (Hei Dou, 黑豆) holds a unique position in Chinese medicine as one of the few common foods that is also a potent medicinal herb. Deeply nourishing and versatile, black soybeans have been treasured in Chinese culinary medicine for over 2,000 years for their ability to tonify the Kidney and Liver, nourish Yin and Blood, and resolve toxicity.

Sweet and neutral in nature, Black Bean enters the Spleen, Kidney, and Liver channels. It is particularly valued for nourishing Kidney Yin and Liver Blood — the foundational substances governing hair, vision, bone strength, and reproductive vitality in TCM. Its dark seed coat is especially rich in flavonoids and anthocyanins, giving it remarkable antioxidant properties alongside its classical medicinal functions.

History & Origin

Black Bean's dual identity as food and medicine has been documented in Chinese literature for over two millennia, with references appearing in classical texts, agricultural records, and materia medica alike.

Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BCE)
Black soybeans were cultivated in China at least since the Zhou Dynasty, featuring in agricultural records as one of the "five grains" (Wu Gu) that sustained civilisation.
