What Is Tongkat Ali?

Tongkat Ali (东革阿里, Dōng Gé Ā Lǐ) is the root of Eurycoma longifolia, a tall slender tree native to the rainforests of Malaysia, Indonesia, and surrounding Southeast Asia. Known as 'Malaysia's ginseng', it has been used for centuries in traditional Malay medicine (Jamu) and has been integrated into TCM-aligned wellness frameworks for its Kidney Yang-tonifying properties. The intensely bitter root is typically prepared as a decoction, powder, or extract.

From a TCM perspective, Tongkat Ali is classified as a Kidney Yang tonic — warming the Gate of Life (Ming Mén), supporting male reproductive function, dispelling cold, and restoring physical and sexual vitality in patterns of Kidney Yang deficiency. Modern research has extensively studied its eurycomanone and quassinoid content, with clinical trials supporting its role in raising free testosterone levels, improving sperm quality, reducing cortisol, and enhancing exercise performance.

History & Origin

Tongkat Ali has a centuries-long history of use in Southeast Asian traditional medicine, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, where it is deeply embedded in male wellness culture and royal herbal traditions.

Pre-16th Century
Indigenous communities across the Malay Archipelago used the bitter root as a general tonic for male vitality, fever management, and post-illness recovery.
16th–18th Century
Portuguese and Dutch colonial records documented local use of Eurycoma longifolia as a powerful bitter tonic and aphrodisiac across Malaysian and Indonesian territories.
19th Century
British colonial botanist Jack formally described the species in 1820, naming it Eurycoma longifolia; the root entered botanical trade catalogues as a Southeast Asian tonic.
Late 20th Century
Malaysian government-sponsored research began systematic study of Tongkat Ali's bioactive quassinoids, leading to standardised extracts and quality benchmarks.
21st Century
Multiple randomised clinical trials have demonstrated effects on free testosterone, cortisol-to-testosterone ratio, sperm parameters, and physical performance, driving global demand.

Traditional Uses

Male Vitality & Libido

Primary traditional use — warms the Kidney Yang and Gate of Life to restore sexual desire, function, and reproductive vitality in men with Kidney Yang deficiency.

Physical Energy & Endurance

Used as an adaptogenic tonic to reduce fatigue, support physical performance, and hasten recovery from exhaustion.

Testosterone Support

Clinical research supports its role in raising free testosterone by reducing sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and cortisol, particularly in stressed or ageing men.

Stress & Cortisol Reduction

Modulates the stress response by reducing cortisol levels, complementing its Yang-tonifying action with adaptogenic benefit.

Male Fertility

Traditional and evidence-based use for improving sperm motility and concentration in men with subfertility.

Fever & Antimalarial (Traditional)

Historically used in Southeast Asian folk medicine for fever and malaria management, though this application is now primarily of ethnobotanical interest.
