Plantain Herb
A humble roadside herb revered in TCM for clearing heat, draining dampness, and cooling the blood — the whole plant used with gentle yet effective power.

What Is Plantain Herb?
Plantain Herb (车前草, Chē Qián Cǎo) refers to the entire above-ground plant of Plantago asiatica, a low-growing perennial found throughout Asia and roadsides worldwide. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is classified as a heat-clearing, dampness-draining herb with a sweet, cold nature that acts on the Liver, Kidney, Lung, and Small Intestine channels. Unlike its seed counterpart (Chē Qián Zǐ), the whole herb also carries a blood-cooling and detoxifying action, making it useful for a broader range of conditions including bloody urine, dysentery, coughs with phlegm, and skin sores.
Fresh Plantain Herb is particularly prized in Southern Chinese folk medicine, where it is added to soups and teas for summer heat conditions, urinary discomfort, and lung heat coughs. Its diuretic properties help eliminate excess dampness and heat through the urine, relieving swelling and painful urination. Modern research has confirmed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities in the herb's key constituents including aucubin, plantaginin, and chlorogenic acid, supporting its long history of therapeutic use.
History & Origin
Plantain Herb has been documented in Chinese medical texts for over two thousand years, valued for its wide availability, gentle nature, and reliable effectiveness. Its use spans classical scholarship, imperial medicine, and everyday folk practice across East Asia.
