Ginseng
The cool, balanced Qi tonic of the West — American Ginseng tonifies Qi without excessive warmth, nourishes Lung and Stomach Yin, generates precious body fluids, and clears deficiency heat for those who need strength without fire.

What Is Ginseng?
American Ginseng (Pao Shen, 泡参) is the North American relative of the celebrated Korean and Chinese ginsengs — the dried root of Panax quinquefolius, first brought to China by Jesuit missionaries in the early 18th century. It was quickly recognised by Chinese physicians as a uniquely valuable addition to the tonic herb repertoire: a ginseng that tonifies Qi without the excessive warmth and Yang-stimulating action of Asian ginseng, making it ideal for Yin-deficient, hot, or heat-prone constitutions.
Sweet, slightly bitter, and cool in nature, American Ginseng enters the Heart, Lung, and Kidney channels. Its cool quality allows it to simultaneously tonify Qi, nourish Lung and Stomach Yin, generate body fluids, and clear deficiency heat — a combination unavailable from the warmer Asian ginseng varieties. This makes it particularly suited for people who need a Qi tonic but have signs of Yin deficiency or heat: dry mouth and throat, afternoon low-grade fever, fatigue with restlessness, or a tendency to overheat. Its ginsenosides — particularly Rb1 and Rc — have been studied extensively for adaptogenic, immune-modulating, cognitive-enhancing, and cardiovascular-supportive properties.
History & Origin
American Ginseng arrived in China via the Jesuit trade network in the early 1700s and was rapidly integrated into TCM practice, quickly becoming one of the most prized and expensive tonic herbs traded between East and West.
Traditional Uses
Tonifies Qi Without Excess Warmth
The defining advantage of American Ginseng — provides powerful Qi-tonifying support for fatigue, weakness, and low energy without the excessive heat generation of Korean Red Ginseng, suitable for Yin-deficient and heat-prone constitutions.
Nourishes Lung & Stomach Yin
Replenishes Lung and Stomach Yin — used for dry cough, dry throat, dry mouth, and thirst from Yin deficiency, especially after illness or in people with constitutionally dry tendencies.
Generates Body Fluids
One of the premier fluid-generating herbs — restores depleted body fluids after febrile illness, summer heat exposure, or any condition that has consumed the body's moisture.
Clears Deficiency Heat
Its cooling nature addresses the low-grade heat of Yin deficiency — used for afternoon fever, night sweats, and the restless, burning sensations of deficiency heat patterns.
Supports Cognitive Function
Classically associated with supporting mental clarity, concentration, and memory — an application now extensively studied through ginsenoside research.
Adaptogenic Stress Support
As an adaptogen, American Ginseng supports the body's resilience to physical and mental stress, reducing cortisol dysregulation and supporting sustained energy without overstimulation.
