What Is ChuanXiong?

ChuanXiong (Chuan Xiong, 川芎) is one of the most important blood-invigorating herbs in all of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dried rhizome of Ligusticum striatum — named for the Chuan (Sichuan) province where the finest specimens are cultivated — is aromatic, pungent, and warming, with a powerful ability to move stagnant Qi and Blood.

Pungent and warm in nature, ChuanXiong enters the Liver, Gallbladder, and Pericardium channels. It invigorates Blood, moves Qi, dispels Wind, and relieves pain — earning it the classical description as "the foremost herb to move Blood and Qi." It is a key ingredient in Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), the foundational Blood-nourishing formula of TCM, and appears in countless formulas for headache, menstrual disorders, and pain from Blood stasis.

History & Origin

ChuanXiong has been documented in Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years and has occupied a central role in blood-moving, pain-relieving, and gynaecological medicine throughout TCM history.

Shennong Bencao Jing (circa 200 CE)
Listed in the classic materia medica for its ability to invigorate Blood, move Qi, and relieve pain — establishing it as a premier herb for Blood stasis and wind-related conditions.

Traditional Uses

Invigorates Blood & Dispels Stasis

The primary action — moves stagnant Blood to relieve pain, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and masses from Blood stasis.

Moves Qi & Relieves Pain

As a Qi-mover, ChuanXiong relieves pain throughout the body caused by Qi and Blood stagnation — particularly headache, chest pain, and flank pain.

Dispels Wind & Relieves Headache

A key herb for headache of all types — Wind-Cold, Wind-Heat, Blood stasis, and Qi stagnation — making it the most versatile headache herb in TCM.

Regulates Menstruation

Moves Blood in the Chong and Ren channels to regulate irregular, painful, or absent menstruation from Blood stasis or Qi stagnation.

Relieves Wind-Damp Pain

Dispels Wind-Damp from the channels and joints, used for rheumatic pain and stiffness with cold and dampness.
