What Is Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit?

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit (山茱萸), known as Shan Zhu Yu, is the dried ripe flesh of Cornus officinalis. Sour and astringent with a slightly warm nature, it both tonifies and secures — nourishing the Liver and Kidney while holding in the body's precious essence, fluids, and Qi.

It is a key herb for Liver and Kidney deficiency: soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, night sweats, frequent urination, and excessive menstrual bleeding. It famously anchors the classic formula Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, and in severe collapse with profuse sweating it is prized for its strong essence-securing action.

History & Origin

Shan Zhu Yu has been used for over two thousand years to consolidate essence and tonify the Liver and Kidney.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)
Recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing and used in Zhang Zhongjing's Jin Gui Yao Lue formula Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan.
Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE)
Valued for securing essence and stopping excessive sweating and discharge.
Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE)
Qian Yi's Liu Wei Di Huang Wan established Shan Zhu Yu as a core Liver-Kidney tonic.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu detailed its dual tonifying and astringent nature.
Modern Era
Iridoid glycosides such as loganin and morroniside are studied for antioxidant and metabolic effects.
