What Is Thinleaf Milkwort Root?

Thinleaf Milkwort Root (远志, Yuǎn Zhì) is the dried root of Polygala tenuifolia, a slender perennial herb of northern China's dry grasslands. Its name, meaning 'far-reaching ambition', reflects its classical reputation for sharpening the mind and strengthening memory. With a bitter, acrid flavour and slightly warm energy, Yuǎn Zhì is unusual in its ability to simultaneously calm the heart spirit and open the mental orifices — a combination few herbs possess.

In TCM theory, the Heart and Kidney must communicate freely for the mind to remain settled and cognition to remain sharp. Yuǎn Zhì facilitates this Heart-Kidney axis, calming anxiety while also boosting focus and memory. It additionally transforms phlegm to clear mental cloudiness and, through its action on the Lung, helps expectorate stubborn phlegm from the chest. Modern research has identified tenuifolin and onjisaponins as neuroactive compounds with potential nootropic and neuroprotective properties.

History & Origin

Yuǎn Zhì has been revered in Chinese medicine as a herb of wisdom and mental clarity for over two thousand years, appearing in the earliest materia medica texts alongside herbs for calming the spirit.

c. 200 CE
Classified as a superior-grade herb in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng, recommended for strengthening the will, improving memory, and prolonged use without harm.
Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE)
Physicians elaborated on Yuǎn Zhì's dual role in calming the spirit and transforming phlegm, expanding its use to chest tightness and cough with profuse phlegm.
1596 CE
Li Shizhen's Běn Cǎo Gāng Mù described its Heart-Kidney communication action and its role in formulas for forgetfulness, insomnia, and palpitations.
Qing Dynasty (1644–1912 CE)
Widely used in formulas for scholars and those requiring sustained mental concentration, reinforcing its association with cognitive enhancement.
21st Century
Pharmacological research has isolated onjisaponins and tenuifolin, which show neuroprotective, anti-depressant, and cognitive-enhancing effects in preclinical studies.

Traditional Uses

Insomnia & Palpitations

Calms Heart fire and bridges the Heart-Kidney axis to treat insomnia, excessive dreaming, and palpitations arising from deficiency or phlegm obstruction.

Poor Memory & Forgetfulness

Classical herb for memory weakness; strengthens the will and opens mental orifices to support cognition and concentration.

Phlegm Misting the Mind

Transforms phlegm that clouds the orifices, used in presentations of mental confusion, disorientation, or epilepsy attributed to phlegm obstruction.

Cough with Profuse Phlegm

Through its Lung channel action, helps expectorate copious, difficult-to-clear phlegm from the chest and airways.

Anxiety & Restlessness

Settles the spirit by calming Heart fire and facilitating smooth Heart-Kidney communication, easing psychological tension.

Topical Application

Traditionally applied topically as a poultice for sores, boils, and breast abscesses, reflecting its dispersing and phlegm-transforming properties.
