What Is Rhizoma Polygonati?
Rhizoma Polygonati (黄精, Huáng Jīng) is the dried rhizome of Polygonatum sibiricum (Siberian Solomon's seal), a shade-loving perennial native to northern and northeastern China. It should not be confused with Yu Zhu (玉竹, Polygonatum odoratum), a related species with which it is sometimes grouped. Huáng Jīng is classified as sweet and neutral in TCM, acting on the Lung, Spleen and Kidney channels — the three organs most directly involved in the production and conservation of Qi, Yin and Jing (essence).
In classical literature, Huang Jing was regarded as one of the most prized longevity herbs — said to be the 'food of the immortals' (xian ren shi) and associated with Daoist practices of essence cultivation. Its broad tonic action encompasses tonifying Spleen and Stomach Qi, nourishing Lung Yin and relieving dry cough, and replenishing Kidney Jing to address premature ageing, lower back weakness and diminished vitality. Modern research has identified bioactive polysaccharides, steroidal saponins and lectins in Huang Jing that demonstrate immunomodulatory, anti-diabetic, anti-ageing and adaptogenic properties.
