What Is Rehmannia Glutinosa?

Rehmannia Glutinosa (生地黄), known as Sheng Di Huang, is the fresh or dried unprocessed root of Rehmannia glutinosa. Sweet, slightly bitter, and cold, it clears heat, cools the blood, nourishes yin, and generates fluids. It is the raw counterpart to the warming, blood-tonifying Prepared Rehmannia (熟地黄).

Sheng Di Huang is a leading herb for heat that has entered the blood — with signs such as fever, bleeding, or skin eruptions — and for yin deficiency with heat, including night sweats, a dry mouth and throat, and 'wasting-thirst'. In women's wellness it is valued for nourishing yin and gently cooling the restless heat that can accompany menopause.

History & Origin

Sheng Di Huang has been a foundational blood-cooling and yin-nourishing herb for more than two thousand years.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)
Listed in the Shennong Bencao Jing and used to cool the blood and nourish yin.
Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE)
Employed for febrile disease with bleeding and for depleted fluids.
Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE)
Central to yin-nourishing formulas; the raw and prepared forms were clearly distinguished.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu detailed its blood-cooling and fluid-generating actions.
Modern Era
Catalpol and other iridoid glycosides are studied for anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects.
