What Is Poria Cocos?

Poria Cocos (茯苓, Fú Líng) is the dried sclerotium of the parasitic fungus Wolfiporia extensa, which grows on the roots of pine trees across China, particularly in Yunnan, Hubei, and Anhui provinces. One of the most frequently used herbs in the entire Chinese materia medica, it is sweet, bland, and neutral in nature, entering the Heart, Spleen, and Kidney channels. Its combination of Spleen-tonifying and dampness-draining actions without being overly drying or stimulating makes it suitable for a vast range of conditions and constitutional types, including deficiency, excess, and mixed presentations.

Fú Líng is uniquely valued for its dual ability to calm the mind (Shen) while simultaneously strengthening digestive function — addressing both the psychological and physical consequences of Spleen deficiency with dampness accumulation. It appears in hundreds of classical formulas, including the foundational Si Jun Zi Tang, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, and Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan. Modern pharmacological research has identified beta-glucans (particularly pachymaran) as its primary bioactive compounds, demonstrating immunomodulatory, anti-tumour, adaptogenic, and hepatoprotective effects that have made it a subject of significant contemporary scientific interest.

History & Origin

Poria Cocos holds one of the most distinguished positions in the history of Chinese herbal medicine, appearing in foundational texts across every major dynasty and recommended by legendary physicians for longevity, calm, and digestive strength.

~200 BCE
Fú Líng is listed in the Shennong Bencao Jing as a superior tonic herb said to nourish the five organs, calm the spirit, and promote long life when taken continuously.
Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE)
Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun and Jinkui Yaolue incorporate Poria in numerous classical formulas including Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan and Wu Ling San for fluid metabolism and heart palpitations.
Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 CE)
Sun Simiao recommends Fú Líng as a longevity tonic and includes it in formulas for insomnia, anxiety, and digestive weakness, noting its gentle and balanced character.
Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen catalogues its cultivation, varieties (white, red, skin), and extensive medicinal applications in Bencao Gangmu, cementing its status as one of the top ten tonic herbs.
Modern Era (20th–21st Century)
Beta-glucan research reveals potent immunomodulatory and anti-tumour properties; Poria extracts are incorporated into oncology support protocols and functional foods worldwide.
