What Is Dried Turmeric?

Dried Turmeric (Tuo Shui Jiang Huang, 脱水姜黄) is the dried rhizome of Curcuma longa, the golden-orange root long used both as a culinary spice and as a medicine across Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is classified among the Blood-invigorating, Qi-moving herbs, valued for its warm, dispersing nature.

Acrid, bitter, and warm in nature, Dried Turmeric enters the Spleen and Liver channels. It invigorates the Blood, moves Qi, dispels Blood stasis, and relieves pain — with a particular affinity for the shoulders and arms. It also promotes menstruation where Blood stasis has caused painful or obstructed flow. Its warming, circulation-promoting nature makes it well suited to dispersing stasis and easing the aches of a depleted, sluggish constitution — a useful supporting herb in postpartum recovery soups. It is also a rich source of curcumin, the antioxidant compound responsible for turmeric’s golden colour.

History & Origin

Turmeric has been used across Chinese, Indian, and Southeast Asian traditions for many centuries, valued both as a warming blood-moving medicine and as a treasured golden spice.

Jiang Huang was recorded in Chinese materia medica as a warm, acrid herb for invigorating Blood, moving Qi, and relieving pain.
Blood-Moving Tradition

Culinary & Medicinal Crossover
Across Asia turmeric became both a daily golden spice and a respected medicine, prized for warmth and circulation.
Modern Research
Turmeric is among the most-studied herbs of the modern era, with curcumin researched for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
