What Is Agrocybe Aegerita?

Agrocybe Aegerita (Cha Shu Gu, 茶树菇), commonly known as Tea Tree Mushroom or Poplar Mushroom, is a beloved edible and medicinal mushroom native to the subtropical forests of southern China. It grows naturally on dead or living wood of tea trees and poplars, and has been foraged and cultivated in China for centuries.

Sweet and neutral in nature, Agrocybe Aegerita strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, supports kidney function, and is traditionally said to calm the mind and nourish the Shen (spirit). Its firm texture and rich, naturally smoky-umami flavour make it one of the most culinarily versatile medicinal mushrooms — appearing in soups, stir-fries, and herbal broths across southern China and Taiwan.

History & Origin

While not listed in the earliest classical materia medica, Agrocybe Aegerita has been part of southern Chinese folk medicine and cuisine for hundreds of years, prized equally for its flavour and its tonic properties.

Traditional Folk Use
Communities in Fujian, Jiangxi, and Hunan provinces foraged wild Tea Tree Mushrooms as both food and tonic, noting their strengthening effects on digestion and their calming influence on the mind.
